OK, so I watched it

I didn't give much thought to THE ROYAL WEDDING until my Twitter and Facebook exploded this morning with people watching it, at all hours, in a freaky obsessive way.  Only then did I begin to question the sanity of some of my more "balanced" friends.

So I turned on the TV, fully intending to watch the cavalcade of guests arriving at Westminster Abbey -- I wanted to make fun of hats, too!  -- but I got sucked into the delightful Matthew McConaughey masterpiece, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and man, did I ever chuckle.

Another quick check of Twitter revealed I was missing the greatest thing ever, so I flipped to CNN International to watch Piers Morgan and Anderson Cooper say hilarious things.  One of my early favorites was from Piers, in regard to the earlier "less important" arrivals at the Abbey, "These people just can't believe they got an invite."  Another was after Elton John arrived, and Piers said, "I'd hate to be the person who has to sing hymns next to him."  Then Piers went on at length about the famous lady in the blue dress whose nose fell apart because of a sustained drug problem so she just got a new one and that's why it looked so wonky?

Facebook and Twitter were right -- this wedding was awesome!

It did remind me of me and Al's wedding in places, especially the swarming police and the snipers up on the roof (you can't be too cautious about unruly guests).  Victoria Beckham showed up at our wedding, too, with a large growth attached to her forehead later determined to be a hat.  Is it really still a "hat" if it's attached to the front of your forehead?  (Just looked it up -- Phillip Treacy calls them "headpieces" and I'm satisfied with that explanation.)

The wedding procession to Westminster Abbey was truly exciting.  Lucien is home for lunch on Fridays, so he watched some of it with me.  When William and Harry left Clarence House and drove through the people who were cheering for them wildly, I inexplicably began bawling like a baby.  Lucien asked, "Why are you crying Mommy?" and I was like, "I HAVE NO IDEA."  Then Anderson Cooper cracked me up with, "I can't believe they're transporting the Royal Family to the wedding in airport shuttles" and I laughed and laughed, but then cried again for the Queen's arrival because her life must be so lonely.  Lucien looked a little afraid of his Mommy, who seemed to have suddenly developed multiple personalities.

Then, as tends to be the case with weddings, once everyone was assembled in the Abbey and right up to the point everyone filed out again -- total snoozefest.  Then TWO kisses on the balcony of Buckingham Palace?  Their wedding night is going to be hot.

Anyway, I've never been into the whole "princess" thing, and I certainly never want my daughter thinking the best thing that can happen to her is to land a prince (The best thing that can happen to her is to marry someone like Al, because then she can move to Paris and become a blogger, lucky girl...)  But this "Will and Kate" seem to have good heads on their shoulders.  Their love is obvious, their wedding joyful, and I'm happy for them and wish them the best.  OK, can we get back to normal life now?  Seriously.

I bumbled out of bed at the usual time I bumble out of bed for work, and I turned on the tv in time to see Kate's dress. I thought hazily, "Aww, pretty.", then turned off the tv to scrounge up a cup of coffee. Priorities!

Amen to that. Happily, I'm in the time zone next door. If I was still in the States, wouldn't have happened, and then I would have missed the hilarity that is Piers and Anderson. Have a happy Royal Wedding day, Mrs. Howard.

Dear God MJ! How could you avoid commenting on Princess Beatrice's bizarre "headpiece"? That little one took the cake in my book.

Trust me, those of us in Seattle trying to be all cool and sneaky about the royal wedding had to really commit. Our alarm went off at 3am so we could see it live. Yep. 3am. In the cold hard dark of morning; we shut it off and watched it later...much later.

Sigh. Another one of 'us' joins the firm. Pretty soon we'll be utterly taken over by Royals.

toodles!

OH, C! You are so correct. Her "headpiece" was the best...thing...ever. I wrote this blog post in a post-wedding stupor, so it's possible it's not the most coherent, or most comprehensive.

I'm proud of you for watching it later. 3:00am? Were people actually up watching it live in Seattle? Wow. Indeed, the Royals must be taking over to make us do such crazy things.

You have to admit the dress was perfection

Bienvenue chez French Girl in Seattle... said...

Dear MJ-- About HALF of my American friends here in Seattle woke up at 1:00am to watch the whole thing. Some of them made scones, drank tea, and one even wore a tiara. I did try to tell them that if Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and the rest of them could see this, they would be utterly dismayed, after fighting so hard for America's independence. To no avail. They asked why this French Girl was not interested in watching the wedding live. I replied that we had done away with Royals a long time ago (say around 1789). They asked if the French ever got nostalgic and missed kings and queens. I replied the French don't, because even though there are no ruling royals in France anymore, we still elect presidents who end up behaving like kings. So there. Glad you enjoyed the ceremony. Hope you stopped crying. -- French girl in Seattle. PS: maybe I will blog about this too, later on. ;-)

French Girl -- Wow. I guess Americans still love them some monarchy. Agreed on the founding fathers bit -- they're probably doing facepalms.

I guess you have Canal + too ;-)

I was stuck watching Matthew too haha!

I was also flipping back and forth with CNN and liked their commentary as well...but when the wedding started I switched to HD but detested the French dubbing...so I found BBC Worldnews and it was in a higher resolution. I hate Piers but have got to say he is one funny bastard sometimes! Anderson Cooper is too serious but loved the comment about the Royal extended family being bused in haha!

I also cried for some reason and little M got all flustered and didn't know what was going on. haha poor baby. He keep saying QUEEN but then later we realized that he thought I was talking about Lighting McQueen from Cars the movie! He is currently obsessed with that movie...

Hi TN -- Canal+ all the way.... I love Piers and Anderson; they had a very yin and yang thing going on. Did you hear Anderson's "Here come more members of the royal family who have the indignity of being transported in buses" line? Then Piers was all, "They're motor coaches! Motor coaches!" Comedy gold.

Have a good weekend and enjoy the sometimes sun/sometimes rain/sometimes clouds!

I was visiting a friend in Ireland so we were on London time and watched for 45 minutes (to see the dress!;). We then went to Dublin:) Funnily enough, we walked into a Marks and Spencer about two hours after the wedding and there was a pic of the newlyweds coming out of the church on the front page of an Irish newspaper! They certainly didn't waste any time!

This Duchesse would not have worn a completetly ridiculous hat had she been invited. Just saying...

I'm with you on the dress, Debbie. Perfection:)
