Back when we lived in Seattle, the first sentence out of my mouth upon entering a park was not, "Oh my God, look at all the GRASS!" That would have been a strange thing to say. But times have changed, and I truly was amazed to see the large expanses of touchable grass at the Buttes Chaumont. No one blows a whistle at you, even if you pull out handfuls of grass and rub them all over your body (In our defense, we were delirious with grass freedom.)
Karin, a fellow blogger friend from An Alien Parisienne, stopped by the park for a visit. It's "her" park; she lives nearby and likes to give any visitor she knows a quick howdy-doo when they come by (that's not a euphemism for anything). She showed Lucien the grotto and told him it was Batman's batcave. Loosh was nervous until he realized a grown man dressed as a bat is someone to pity, not fear.
We had a leisurely picnic lunch next to the stream. While Coco ripped apart every sandwich we made and flung the parts in all different directions, Lucien joined in with a group of boys -- most of them making noise! -- and ran around like little boys do. They splashed through the stream, rolled down hills, talked about poop. Even with all the little boy commotion, they didn't attract a single stinkeye from the adults. Lots of grass and no stinkeyes? Quick, someone remind me why we're living in the 6th.
Coco's at a great age. Her little personality is really starting to come out and man, were we ever surprised to discover she's terrifying. She sees everything. She knows everything. She's focused and determined and not eff'g around so don't waste her time. We think she's lying in wait... patiently.... identifying weaknesses.... until the second she's ready to rise up and destroy us all.
this is the leg ima defeat you with
Coco the barbarian
The downside of having an attentive teacher who's not prone to emotional outburst is she really notices all my mistakes. There's still a slew of 'em. Sometimes she has to take a moment to laugh into her cupped hands and say, "Ouf, c'est bizarre!" before composing herself and continuing. I'm taking that as a compliment for absolutely no reason other than denial.
The problem with learning French the way I am, pretty much all listening with no writing and very little reading, is I'm missing small, yet crucial, words. When spoken quickly by a Frenchie, many of those little words run together so I don't realize they're there. When I repeat what I thought I heard, I end up with people laughing in my face and saying, "Ouf! C'est bizarre!" (IT'S A COMPLIMENT!)
For instance, the way I've been saying, "I have no idea" -- I never heard the "en," so I've always said "Je n'ai aucune idée" instead of the correct, "Je n'en ai aucune idée." My version makes sense, but it's not exactly the idea I want to communicate. I'm basically telling people I don't have any thought in my head whatsoever -- literally I have NO idea.
I'm thrilled to know this is what I've said to mamas at school:
Hot Thing Two: So what are you guys doing this weekend?
Me: I'm completely devoid of thought, nothin' in the ole noggin', a real dumbass -- Ooh! Squirrel!
The more French I "learn," the more I realize I've been free entertainment for the French for over two years now. I should charge them admission to this freak show.
Alex is in Venice this weekend. That was our deal -- me solo to Rome with Robin, then Al solo to Venice with his parents -- but I'm really wishing I could have gone both times and he stay here with the kids twice. I don't think that's unreasonable.
Now Happy Mother's Day to my mama. I sure do love my mama.
MJ
I love being a mama, too, even though I have two intense children hellbent on my destruction.

My sons liked going up the hills and just rolling down through the grass at Buttes Chaumont. Liv would have no part of that. Although all the kids liked getting in the stream like yours.
That grotto is wild. Actually the whole park is unique.
You're probably better off staying with Coco in Paris than going to Venice. The most vivid memory I have of Venice is "poop" from every kind of animal and bridges. Zach was in a stroller at the time and there was no green space so every kind of poop would collect on those stroller wheels. My wife and I got to see the poop on those wheels close-up as we hauled Zach over bridges every 5 mins.
I'm actually heading to my French lesson in 15 mins. I'm sure this is the week I will be fluent. :-)
You know, Brian, that's fascinating. I've always held Venice up in my memory as this kind of perfect place, a place I loved unconditionally. But now that you mention it, I totally remember pigeon poop. Everywhere. Lots and lots of pigeon poop. So HA, Alex! Sucks to be you!
....crap, thanks for trying, Brian, but I'm still sad about it. Best to you, good luck in French class.
Ooh, it looks gorgeous there! I'm a parkwhore, and I'll writhe around in fresh grass wherever I can find a patch.
Coco is adorable!
Yo, parkwhore. COCO IS TERRIFYING. Sshhhhh.... keep your voice down, she can hear us she hears everything...
That parks looks wonderful! Glad to hear the kids really enjoyed it.
Your Coco sounds just like my little Olivia -- determined to do everything she sees. Girlfriend has no fear and doesn't understand "you're too little for that" business. Liv gives me a heart attack nearly every day.
Joni! Great. You telling me I should prepare myself for dual heart attacks -- one from each child -- on a regular basis for the foreseeable future? Well that's just great news. If one child is super nuts, isn't the other child supposed to be super chill? That's what I was promised, anyway, but Cokes apparently has her own ideas on the subject.
OK, good night everyone. Getting late here and Mama's flying solo, so will be up at the crack of dawn with two loud children. Bye.
Maybe what Coco is telling you is that the Loosh IS the chill one...(cue scary music)
-Uncle Alex
My first thought was they probably pee in that creek.
My second thought was that I shouldn't write that. Too late.
My teacher once told me that as soon as foreigners figure out French grammar, the French will change it all. That right there explains the passe simple and some of the subjunctives. It's all made up for foreigners. A tense used only in writing? REALLY? That make those Americans cry in their sleep.
MWAHHAHAHA
I visited this park for the first time when I was in Paris a month ago... It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon and all of Paris was in that park... it still was fabulous with people lolling about everywhere. ON THE GRASS even!
I could tell you many stories about my French and the major faux pas that have been made... It does not stop me from trying though.
Coco is really growing up to become a real toddler... adorable!!
Bon weekend,
Genie
Happy Mother's Day, MJ! Definitely will have to get to Buttes Chaumont before we leave. On the list. We did make it to Parc Sceaux, however, which is AWESOME. It's like Versailles with picnics and soccer balls. If you haven't been, take your grass-deprived children asap!
You'd never been to the Buttes Chaumont?! I blame the metro steps! I totally agree with you: it's gorgeous! I hear that Parc Montsouris is pretty nice too. Will have to check it out next time:)
When you describe Coco, I have a vision of Pinky and the Brain (with the Loosh as Pinky and Coco as the Brain):
Loosh: What are we gonna do tonight, Coco?
Coco: Same thing we do every night, Loosh... try to take over the wooooooooooooooorld!!
:))
What I want to know is, if having people on the grass still allows the grass to grow, what is UP with the FRIGGING "revolving grass squatting areas" of the Jardin du Lux???
Hi Uncle Alex. Thanks for the thought, really.
Marie, your thoughts on pee in the stream are probably not far off. What does it say about us that, even if we'd thought about that, we probably would have gotten in anyway?
Genie! Truly, it's a beautiful park. Definitely our favorite. Everyone's got stories of saying dumb things when learning another language. If you're not sounding dumb at some point, I guess you're not really trying.
Christi -- OK, Sceaux has been on the list forever. Thanks for reminding me, gotta do that one. When are you heading back? And Happy Mothers Day to you, too!
Duchesse -- Ha, Pinky and the Brain, that's pretty good. No, we'd never been to Buttes Chaumont. It was one of our final locations to scratch off the ole list. We almost know all of Paris now.
DaV! I love those revolving grass squares at the Lux. It's like a little surprise -- you never know which small grassy area you're allowed to cram onto with a thousand other people. And the other sections sit perfectly empty. It's just so strange, cracks me up every time.
Have a great weekend
I have had 10 years of formal French education and have always said "Je n'ai aucune idee" also. I am blushing, but thankful to have my error pointed out!
Those Frenchies though, they've now lost another source of squirrel goodness in one week.., sacre bleu!
MJ:
My daughter and I found you can watch online for FREE all 52 episodes of French in Action (do you remember that series on PBS in the 1980s)? I loved it!
http://www.learner.org/resources/series83.html?pop=yes&pid=684#
It's basics though, which you might not need, but it's a fun series.
We haven't made it there yet either. Some people at The Husband's work mentioned it and so did our French Teacher btw ;-)
Speaking of French Teacher sounds like the same from me...she was making fun of Americans last week but not you or I ;-) She says we are not the typical American's phewwww...;-) She doesn't say C'est Bizarre to me but C'est trop Anglais! I'm just talking away with her and I really enjoy our conversations...and I am really learning a lot. Too bad a lot of vacations and baby # 2 are coming up fast I'm afraid I will lose it all quickly.
We will have to check out Parc des Buttes Chaumont one weekend...too bad we have construction starting again and have to pack up 3 rooms in 5 weekends. Hopefully I'll get it done early so we can enjoy the spring/summer but I'm a big procrastinator!
Happy "American" Mother's Day with your kids! We are not celebrating until the French Mother's Day it gives my husband more days to not think of a good present ;-0
Half the time, I have given up trying to speak French the proper way, and accept that I will always, ALWAYS eff it up one way or another. And I will be living here the rest of my damn life because I went and fell in love with a Frenchie. But he's got great eyes, kisses good, and makes me laugh, so I think I'll keep him, stay in France and put up with always being the outsider.
I just say "Aucune idée" and leave off the complete sentence. No one seems to care.
Excellent blog, by the way. ;)
Happy Mother's Day to the American Mom in Paris!
Happy Mother's Day from VA! Hope you're having a nice QUIET day!
StayingPositive
This post made me laugh out loud - literally! Happy Mother's Day.
Happy Mother's Day!!
That park looks amazing and so un-Paris (from my point of view). Where are the little fences??
Wow I'm so late to comment..ha
Love that park gotta go there...hi to Karin....that drawing is too funny....
Finally sunny and warmish here....and I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to have gone to Venice too...but that's just me:)
I am positive my child is trying to kill me too. ;) LOVE the pictures of that park...really lovely.
The Buttes Chaumont is a great park - but not for picnics! First of you have to practically reserve a square metre of grass in advance, and secondly there are slopes everywhere, meaning that you lose at least half of each bottle of wine as it goes rolling off down the hill...
Well hello there.
Jenn! Whoa! You are not alone! I've heard this from several people now. We should start a club.
Marie! Thankfully I am very much past the basics. Though I still make dumb mistakes all the time, so probably couldn't hurt to watch it...
Baby Number Two? Did I know that? Congratulations! I get "C'est Bizarre" when I'm trying to say something fancy, or when I say something "trop Quebec."
Bold Soul, I LOVE your attitude. You are a super winner -- and sounds like you've got yourself a fantastic Frenchie.
DaV, Staying Positive, Elizabeth and Laurel, thanks for the Mothers Day greetings. I had a great weekend with the kids -- no Al, as he was in Venice -- so hopefully will get some R&R on French Mothers Day. It's so great the husbands get a do-over here.
Debbie. It ain't a party 'til Debbie rolls up.
Mommy Lisa, they're all trying to kill us in their own little ways. And yet we love them so. We are suckers.
Adam, seriously on the slope thing. It took us awhile before we found a flat spot next to the stream. Worked out well for us -- make your reservation there next time. I kind of love the mental image of a bunch of wine bottles rolling down the hill, so thanks for that.
Bye all, thanks again and always for reading this stuff
Every time I go to Paris, I MUST spend time at that park, the one to end all parks. Amazing, isn't it? Rarely do you find a tourist there. It's never mentioned in guide books. [Actually, I hope people don't catch on after this post!!]
Hi Anonymous. No worries. The posse is a mighty posse, but it's not a huge posse. And they promise to be discreet if they show up...
It's interesting it's not in many of the guide books. It's the prettiest park in Paris, I think.
This post is amazing, thank you for sharing pix of your beautiful family!
Oh my goodness! I've been saying exactly the same thing - omitting the 'en'! Think I need a little chat with the French side of my family about correcting me on the 'little things'!!!
MJ,
I'll drop you an email with our updates...and I have something funny to tell you maybe you can write up a story about it. As I am too nice to do it myself on my blog ;-)
TN
Coco and Frances will get along just fine.
Thanks or another awesome tip MJ. We are arriving in Paris in a short 7 weeks with two kids...so that park will be on our list!
One thing about Paris - this city does have wonderful parks.
You should visit Montsouris on the Left Bank. It's as delightful as Chaumont.
A new event for Montsouris this spring is that two black swans have now joined the white ones in the lake.
I bet you knew I was going to read your blog one day! From now on I will try to show you and TN a little bit more of my crazy side so that you have more material to write about...
*waves*
LOOK! I finally made it here. :) Thank you so much for the holla! And OMG, you have attracted quite the blog following of late! Look at all the commenters here now! I remember the olden days on the blog when there were just a few of us in the posse and now you are getting some of the Big Guns Paris Blog Folk to your truly phenomenal place to read. I'm glad folks are figuring it out. :)
I am so, so, so glad that you liked the park. I knew that you would. I'm happy to have been there for the five or so minutes that I was, lol, to at least show Lucien the Bat Cave. I feel truly lucky to live so close to the park.
"My new teacher is calm, sweet, organized, and doesn't have any strong opinions about how I'm living my life."
Wow. Are you sure she is really from France?! Okay, I bet she is not originally Parisian. That's gotta be it. ;-) All kidding and stereotyping aside, I am glad that you have had a variety of teachers who have shown you how to appreciate different personality types. I think you should label this one Madame Calme, for that seems to be her defining characteristic. I'm glad she is still being exacting with you in terms of grammar so that you can continue to know just how bad you are screwing up in front of either Hot Thing 1 or Hot Thing 2. :)~
Speaking of -- I have to say now that I have met the entire family, you and Al really do have to qualify as Hot Things 1 & 2 from North America!! You are an extraordinarily good-looking family, you know! Just look at those cute kids you've produced! My goodness.
BTW, also speaking of Your Hotness, I saw Chloe's photos of you last night at her vernissage. I'd seen some on Tumblr, too, but in print they are FANTASTIC. You look so great in them!
Okay -- going to go now to try to catch up on more recent posts. Like EUROVISION. LOL! Wow. You had a jones going for that one, huh. No pun intended. Haha!
Off to other blog regions I am, then.
Take care, chica!
