Red Boy

Lucien is going to the centre de loisirs again this summer.  Here's what he looked like when I dropped him off yesterday morning --

Here's what he looked like when I picked him up at 6:00 p.m. --

Don't worry, he was not mauled by a wolverine nor viciously doodled upon with a red marker.  He came home this nice fluorescent red color thanks to sunburn.

One of the items a child must have in his/her backpack when they attend the centre de loisirs is sunscreen.  The children spend a lot of time outdoors, often at parks and wading pools, and if you show up sunscreen-less on a sunny day, you're gonna get a heavy sigh aimed in your general direction.  What I didn't realize is the sunscreen is merely a decorative element, as the animateurs apparently have no interest in really using the stuff, even when parked at a wading pool for hours in the hot sun.  Maybe they just like to line up the bottles and look at the pretty colors (who can blame them, they're so bright!)

I had a different post planned for today, a long one because I have lots to talk about.  But I cannot write an adequate post because my son is wailing in the next room and I am attempting to make a poultice out of some ingredient I've never heard of before but my Peruvian cleaning lady claims is magic.  She speaks French with a thick accent, so it will either take the pain out of his sunburn or make his skin burn like a thousand suns, I'm not really clear which.

Please direct all rage about the blog being crap today to the centre de loisirs.

Wish I could hug my red baby, but he'd just yell something like, "ow ow ow ow."
MJ

P.S.  Lucien came into the room just now and saw me drawing the red parts all over that picture.  He asked what I was doing and I said, "I want to show people what you look like right now."  He yelled, "I look like that???" and is currently staring at himself in the mirror with great concern.  So now not only is he in pain, he is also extremely self-conscious.  Gimme a mother award!

Ahhh...Debbie and Mrs. Howard. Hello to you both. Poor Loosh indeed, and poor me, because this was supposed to me my solo day -- Loosh at the centre and Cokes with the cleaning lady. I don't know who I feel more sorry for, me or Loosh. I guess I should say Loosh (in public anyway).

Have good days and stay out of the sun if you know what's good for ya.

Hi MJ! I am so sorry I have not been over to your blogplace in so long. I was just at Anne's DC blog & saw your comment there, and said "American Mom! I need to head over there! It's been so long!"

Poor Loosh. As a person of extremely pale Goth-like skin, I can fully comprehend his pain. I am so sorry that he has to go through this & because of negligence. And so sorry that it messed with some You Time, which every good mother knows it absolutely necessary to keep being good (which you definitely are!).

So Mr. Paul and I are headed off to N America tomorrow, and I shall be absent from the blogosphere for a while. Hopefully when I return, I will read about how the Loosh has turned into a little, healthy brown sun god due to the magic healing powers of Peruvian poultices. :)

And I would love to head out for a coffee when we return! It's been far too long. We'll do it once school is back in session, and there will be no chance of sunburns occurring during sunny summertime activities! (Although, on the bright side - heh - isn't it nice that the sun finally decided to shine in Paris?! Maybe the folks at the Centre de Loisirs were a little thrown off by its sudden return. "What's THIS bright glowing ball in the sky, pray tell?!?")

Hang in there, MJ!

Ooooooooooooh I feel his pain! I once got sunburned so badly on my face (second-degree burns as it were) that I had blisters! I was so swollen that I could barely open my eyes! Guess who never goes anywhere now with 50 + Roche-Posay sunscreen in her purse (and I slap it on too!)!

What is it with the French that they won't get it in their heads that the sun is DAN-GE-ROUS?!!!

I wonder if those after-sun lotions work well?

How is he, now?

We really enjoyed the nice weather in Paris this weekend and were pleasantly surprised to see that summer had finally arrived in The Hague on Monday! Well... it lasted two days. We're back to crap weather today and it seems set to last.

Oh, and your post on Prague was deliriously funny:) I too went to Prague before all the touristy madness (it was in 1991)and God, has it changed! We went back last Fall for a long weekend: the colours were breathtaking, the air was crisp and the food was to die for! And even though everything is more expensive, I found it pretty affordable compared to the Netherlands and France. And a bargain compared to Denmark, where we had spent a weekend two weeks before! And the veggie food there was A-MA-ZING! I would go back just for that!

A rich, lustrous sun burn is a right-of-passage to adulthood...assuming one survives...

At about this point I would be whipping out my dictionary to let those teachers know you are pissed.

Joni! It didn't really help, but I told the cleaning lady it helped a lot because she was really excited about it.

Karin, I've missed you! Have fun in the ole U.S. of A and YES, coffee when you return. Congrats on the happy date I heard about on Facebook, too. Can I come?? I won't be obnoxious or anything.

Annabelle, I WAS pissed! Yes I was!

Duchesse! The Loosh is doing better after battling through a couple days of pain. I'm going to apply his sunscreen myself from here on out. Don't trust nobody, that's my new motto.

We had sun for two days, too, and then it went away again. Summer has sucked this year.

True, Prague is still a deal compared to other places, especially, of course, Paris. And it's so, so pretty and agreed -- food amazing.

Laughing Salmon -- well...he's arrived then. My little boy....

Marie! Funny -- I told them this morning they forgot the sunscreen and they needed to REMEMBER the sunscreen next time and you know what happened??? The lady I was talking to said, "well it wasn't ME who forgot to put it on him. I wasn't even with them."

Classic Parisian buck-passing. I don't know how anything gets done around here.

Bye all, you rock. Hard.
